Easter

I'm doing a little editing of the food blog list, and I've collected a few interesting Easter food links.

Delicious Days has an intriguing Easter egg idea - baking cake inside eggs.

Ice Cream Ireland makes Ice Cream Easter Eggs

Rubber Slippers in Italy makes Cuddura, a Sicilian egg-topped pastry "prepared for the festival of Easter. After refraining from the consumption of meat, eggs and cheese during the Lenten period, it is interesting to note how much of a role, or more importantly, how plentiful of a role, in which eggs played in the preparation of holiday sweets upon the arrival of Holy Week."

Food Blogs

It's been months since I listed any food blogs here or did any real work on the food blog list. I was going to declare a sort of bankruptcy, like Lawrence Lessig's Email Bankruptcy in regards to the requests so far this year, by throwing them all out and starting from scratch, but I think I can get the emailed ones on the list. Here's some of them that have waited the longest.

Ceres and Bacchus New Paltz NY. She's been bribing me for months to get on the list.

Crumbs Upstate NY.

cucina nicolina San Francisco.

Food Cost Control "A small corner of the web universe developed to help food cost wizards improve their craft." An interesting look into the profit-making side of the food business. Dumneazu "Ethnomusicological Eating East of Everywhere." Budapest, Hungary

James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Saveur has an interesting food site. Not really a full blown blog, with only one entry per month, but it's still worth checking out with pretty photos and an archive of his writings.

Food blogs

It's now several months since I've highlighted any new food blogs here. I got behind and the big pile-up of blogs got out-of-hand. I may have to declare "request bankruptcy" and start from scratch. (That concept comes from Lawrence Lessig and his 'email bankruptcy'). For now I'm just going to work backwards, since the latest crop has some really good ones. I know I'm going to dissapoint some bloggers whove asked months earlier, but I'll eventually get around to most of them.

Food blogs

Some really good food blogs to check out.

Skillet Doux Chicago. He recently did an excellent review of Alinea, with great photography.

Speaking of Chicago, I found this Chicago Wine Shop Google map over at Dr. Vino who has a blog

Ethicurean An eater of tasty things that are also sustainable, organic, local, and/or ethical — S/O/L/E foods, for short. San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, and Austin

Remarkable Palate By Chef Mark Tafoya. NY. Also includes a podcast.

Epi-log, a food blog from Epicurious

I know all you people that requested inclusion feel like I'm ignoring you, there will come a day when I'll publish a massive list.

More great food blogs

Again I ignore the big list of blogs who've requested inclusion to higlight some food blogs that rise above. Eventually I'll get a chance to look at the rest (I've got no doubt they probably include ones as good as the following), and get them included on the list.

Until then check these out:

Lobstersquad a food blog with drawings. By an illustrator in Madrid, this one will no doubt be very popular not only because of the art, but because of the perspective on Spanish food.

Cookbook 411 "Cooking by the Books". Excellent photography. Check out her Food Photography blog too - Still Life With...

Some of the blogs listed below I found in recent travels through other blogrolls, but they all were on Still Life's list. She must know where to look. There's plenty other great blogs for you to check out there.

acuriousmix Singapore. Another with excellent photography.

Bron Marshall "Classic and Creative Cuisine". NZ. I don't know how such an excellent food blog can hide under my radar. Giant, beautiful photos and creative and inspiring recipes.

Evil Jungle Prince This one is unique because of the author's pursuit of the exoctic. "...my hobby might appropriately be titled Cooking for the Suburban Savage. Just as the military men of the mid-century America period brought home slightly skewed visions of the "exotic" outside world and cultivated them in the remote privacy of their suburban backyards and bachelor pads, cooking for me is also an escape of sorts." The photography is topnotch as well.

Fancy Toast A new pretty blog from Chicago.

I've run into the beautiful Italian blog FiordiZucca before, but now it's in English! Fiordizucca goes English.

The Wine Offensive "anecdotes for the gourmet proletariat" "a surly, dissonant voice in opposition to the glossy magazine culture of food and the moneyed critocracy of wine." Where the hell have I been to have missed this one? As informative as it is hilarious (or, depending on your veiwpoint, offensive).

Food blogs

My list of food blogs is in sad shape. It's riddled with link rot and there's loads of good blogs piling up trying to get on. Rather than put it off any longer, here's some of them that for some reason have risen to the top. Don't feel bad if you're not included, I have to admit I haven't even glanced at the requests of gotten in the last couple of weeks.

Ice Cream Ireland all about making, eating, pondering about and enjoying sweet things by an Irish ice cream man and chocoholic in Dingle, Ireland with recipes included."

I include this one because it reminds my of an experiment I was witness to in the Celtic Knot. I think I've had a Guinness float (vanilla ice cream and Guinness) but this time it was made with Mackeson Triple Stout. Mackeson is from the London brewery Whitbread. "Wait?" you say, "An English beer in an Irish Ice cream reference?" Not to worry, the stuff is contract brewed here in the USA by Boston Beer Company. Anyway, Mackeson is a perfect dessert stout, thick with chocolaty, coffee and cream essences. It's sweet with about being cloying. Poured over vanilla ice cream it's delicious - but I suggested throwing in a shot of Bailey's - and it became utterly delicious. Sadly, they're not carrying Mackeson at the moment.

Control+Alt+Chicken "is a new form of cooking show... one in which the chefs don't know how to cook!" This videocast features Alex Albrecht of Diggnation fame (the hilarious geek-oriented beer-drinking podcast).

The first lady of the blogosphere, Megnut is an all food blog now. A true weblog, done by one of the best at the craft. She's recently reviewed Alinea.

And a few of Italian-themed food blogs and one I've been promising to get on for months now:

Cream Puffs in Venice

Cucina Bella "Celebrating everyday food for everyday people" Sandy Hook, Connecticut.

My Life Italian Naples, Italy

Lucullian Delights Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy

Porcini Chronicles

Rubber Slippers in Italy Provincia di Lecco, Lombardia, Italy

Food Blogs

I've skipped almost a month of updating the list of food blogs, so I'm way behind. Here's a list of the ones I either continually forget to add, or that deserve a little extra attention. I always believe that drinks and dives deserve extra attention.

The Art of Drink "An exploration of cocktails, spirits, bartending and mixology."

Cardamom Addict "Omnivorous ramblings by a habitual eater."

Dirty Sugar Cookies

Dive: "Every town has one. Surely, you've been to one. Maybe you even work in one. Against better judgment, we'll venture into and eat at the places our ears, eyes, and nose instinctively warn us against. Hi! I'm Kevin. Join me as we go spelunking the culinary hole-in-the-walls, the greasy spoons, the roach coaches - all while constantly searching for that diamond in the rough. So hold on to your seats, cause it's about to get ugly."

Kinki Style An American culinary student in Japan.

Kitchen Sister "Cooking up Ideas for Dinner

Post-Haste Taste

wannabeTVchef "Written by chef & food writer Kevin Ashton who has cooked around the world for the rich & famous."

Word of Mouth "Pete Cherches blogs under duress about food, travel and other stuff."

Much more to come, don't panic if you haven't been mentioned yet.

Another new kid food blogging

Some kid named Frank Bruni has a blog now. I think it's cute that a little east coast hometown paper is joining our well-established food blogging community. I guess he's going to copy the rest of us and try to review New York restaurants.

I joke of course, I welcome him into the food blog community. I'll be reading him and hoping he'll be answering some of the great comments he's getting. Although I'm a little less concerned about his weight than some people are.

Food Blogs

For my duties for this year's food blog awards, I'm reading through countless excellent blogs by people I swear are moonlighting from their cooking magazine jobs or are hiring pastry chefs, restaurant crews and photo studios to do their blogs for them, and the even more infinite blogs by regular people who do an amazing job of recording their culinary adventures with words and photos. As you might imagine, I'm finding lots of blogs not on my list. Here's the first flood of them.

The Accidental Scientist "a scientist noshing and fumbling her way through the food world" Eugene, Oregon.

Baking for Britain London

CalorieLab Calorie Counter News

Themed food blogs

A short break from my Arizona reviews to make a feeble attempt to catch up with some food blogs.

There's lots of more I'll get to in a bit, but here are some themed blogs.

Ag Moment "A little agriculture news to go with your morning coffee"

The Chippie "My particularly refined taste in chips has been cultivated by years of eating chips. I have no formal training in food, chip making or chip consumption. Sadly, no one pays me to eat chips." Austin, Texas.

Confessions of a Butcher "I know all about your meat"

The Forklift The authors wrote a cookbook with methods and recipes for dealing with the large portions bought from warehouse food stores, now they have a blog.

Opinionated About Dining "a guide to where to eat and why you should eat there" There's an enormous amount of restaurant info here, and I like his reviews and writing. However I'm going to be opinionated about his graphics and photography. We've all heard the discussions before about flash photography in fine dining rooms, and putting aside the aerial photography style of shooting dishes, what will get this guy banned is his use of enlarged pixelated, aliased, artifact-filled restaurant logos. It's sure to upset restaurants that spend as much on designers and Identity as they do on a year's supply of foie gras. Despite my opinions, you should check out his photo albums of great dishes and chefs.

Kitchen Contraptions.com "is a blog dedicated to everything you need to make your cooking experience better!" One of those very commercial blogs in the BlogPire network, but a great way to find cool things like Temperature Controlled Butter Dishes and Coffee Presses for Nalgene Water Bottles.

The Cooking News Also on the BlogPire network.

More Food Blogs

A few more food blogs.

Olive and Mason eat Chicago, "this blog chronicles the betting and lunching adventures of olive and mason, who work together in an office (and are secretly dating)." Lunch reviews in the Streeterville area of Chicago. Streeterville has always been a bit of a mystery to me, so I'll be reading this one regularly. The area is such a mystery to me that I didn't even know there was an Elephant and Castle on East Huron, steps away from the Apple 'Cathedral' on Michigan Ave. I've eaten at the E & C on Adams a while back, and have been wanting to go back. While nobody beats Debbie's Fish And Chips at the Celtic Knot, E and C has a unique fish batter - almost like an airy donut since it's so light and sweet.

Asian Vegan "Journey in the creation of a restaurant" Portland

Cooking Fire Traditions of the Global Kitchen "a meditation on how to regain some of the lost ground without surrendering the SubZeros, CuisinArts, and Viking Stoves that define the modern kitchen: ways to infuse cooking with tradition." This is one of those particularly good blogs, with excellent photography and interesting explorations.

An Exploration of Portland Food and Drink "throwing ourselves on the grenade of bad food to save you"

Fine Dining Solutions "A Personal Chef Commentary: Recipes, Ingredient Discussion & Reviews of Local Markets & Restaurants" DC.

In a Fancy Glass
you don't need to save the crystal for a special day, even water tastes better in a 'Fancy Glass'" An American in Tokyo.

Plantstalkers "we slay vegetables"

Renaissance Culinaire "A pastry student, blogging my way to Pastry Chefdom." Portland

The Way The Cookie Crumbles "the life and death of my culinary endeavors"

Vegan Porn

Eating Asia Kuala Lumpur. Vital information says "The writer of this blog has a special place in the annals of Chicago Chowhounds. Once upon a time, our palates were shaded, shaded by our menu limitations. We knew a place as simple as Yum Thai in Forest Park seemed to offer treats beyond its stated choices. In fact, there was a secret menu, but a menu no one could actually read. Awfully hungry, we posted the menu on the Internet, seeking the kindness of a stranger who would tell us what to eat. e.e. cumming's like foodfirst came to our rescue. From the across the sea, she translated our Yum Thai menu and then later Spoon Thai's. It's been fun eatin' every since."

Food blogging advice

Amateur Gourmet has reached his 1000th post and it's called How to Start a Food Blog. He's got some good advice for you fledgling bloggers. For lots more detailed advice on food blogging, visit the Food Blog S'cool.

I could spout on here with advice and tips for new bloggers, but the Amateur Gourmet (certainly not an amateur blogger after being that prolific) covers the most important part of blogging - what you get out of it. It's been said before, blogging helps you become a more knowledgeable writer, a better communicator and in the case of food blogging, a better cook and a better photographer.

I recently made the argument against setting popularity as a goal for blogging, but that doesn't mean you can't try for greatness, or a book deal. But with the food bloggers population increasing exponentially, you will really have to shine above all the rest.

Here's a few tips I don't see in many blog advice posts:

Keep it short. The classic blog post is short, two paragraphs at most. Complicated recipes and 12 course restaurant reviews are obviously going to take more, but if you post essays that run 4 screen-page scrolls every time, readers will start to skim posts. Reread and edit anything that's redundant, repetitive and that you've already said twice. And please people, use the ≤p≥tag. 70 sentence paragraphs are easy to write, but impossible to read. And while I'm at it, use a period once in awhile.

Use some personality. Don't be afraid to be opinionated, both on your blog and on others, but be respectable, reasonable and likable. People with character become celebrities, or at least they become memorable. That cake recipe that reads the same as a Betty Crooker cookbook isn't going to make you likable no matter how good it is.

Link, link, link. Links are the currency of the web. So spend. You will be paid back with interest. Link to other bloggers, food products you find interesting, the best recipes, food information etc. It's not like there's nothing out here to link to. After you've written a recipe look at the words you've used and do some googling, you're guaranteed to find something interesting and useful for your readers. Besides all that, links give readers' eyes something to fall on if they are skimming, and may pull them into reading in depth.

I was just going to do a post on brand new (a couple of months or less) food blogs, but as I compile, I keep finding lots of them that have been around for 6 months or more. I'm just going to list all my current additions before they get out of hand. Don't feel bad if you asked to be included and I missed you, there's more coming.

Getting behind on the food blogs

I meant to post this list a week ago, but I've been held up by work, and some strange "global CGI" problem from my webhost.

Don't fret if you've contacted me and aren't on this list, I have another one coming that's just as long. By the way, I've written some inclusion/exclusion rules that basically say that I'll link to food blogs, not food sites. I'm getting an alarming amount of form requests to include cheesy link farms.

The Adventures of the Tastebuds!

cheap veggie gourmet " I'm poor. Really poor... I constantly see people complaining about the cost of food, and it baffles me. I've always eaten very well, and food is one item that has never strained my budget."

Cook's Journal "I am a professional cook. I chose this life because food is exciting to me! Equally exciting to me are the techniques that are always there to be learned, even by the most seasoned chef. A chef or cook that "knows everything" is a fool. A great Chef, is always a student, even to his cooks, although he may remain a silent student."

Delish "A food blog from New Zealand"

Feeding Faces "A forum for my musings about the life I lead as a waiter and/or cook in the dining industry."

Food- Got To Love It

The green jackfruit Pittsburgh

Home Cooking Amateurs Anonymous

Is It EDible? San Francisco

Mahanandi "Cooking with Consciousness - Recipes from India ~ Andhra Pradesh ~ Rayalaseema ~ My hometown Nandyala"

New Orleans Cuisine

Nibble & scribble Singapore

The Occasional Epicure Brisbane, Australia

Oswego Tea Heidelberg, Germany

Post Punk Kitchen "Behind the scenes at the world most beloved vegetarian, punk rock cooking show" Brooklyn.

Renaissance Culinaire A pastry student, blogging my way to Pastry Chefdom

Seven Spoons Another Blog with outstanding photography. Southern Ontario, Canada

Sibilous Observations on Food in the Bay Area

The Travelers Lunchbox Edinburgh, Scotland

The World on a Plate "The online home of the Food-and-God Guy, Frank Remshifski, and his newspaper column, The World on a Plate.  The column, and this site, regularly serves original recipes, food history, and cooking techniques." Lambertville NJ. Frank noticed I was in Lambertville early this year and laments the loss of a burger cheaper than ten bucks in his cool, but gentrifying town.

But I still envy him because he's in the same town as the River Horse Brewery.

Some Food Blogs

I've got a great big list of new blogs for the list, but here are a few with some interesting, focused themes.

The Bruni Digest "This blog is predicated on the suggestion that every Wednesday, in the Times Dining Out section, Frank lays a huge faberge egg of hilarity."

A Hamburger Today "a beefy mix of news digests, original reviews, and musings on burgers. Our favorite condiment here is opinion, and we've got plenty of it." From The People who brought you Slice

Independent America "We're on the lookout for "Mom & Pop" -- producing our own road movie across the United States. More than ever it seems like it's Independent America vs. Corporate Chain store America. We're hunting for those pressure points along with our black lab Miles. We've vowed to make our 52-day trip without setting one tire on an interstate highway – without setting one foot inside a corporate chain restaurant, motel or store."

PikaPikaChick's Food Pricing Blog "I'm going to dissect recipes and hopefully figure out a way to make things more budget-friendly without losing out on taste and appearance."

Kitchen Parade: Veggie Venture "On April 1, Kitchen Parade launched a Veggie Venture. The goal was to cook a vegetable, with new recipes and new vegetables, every single day for an entire month. Why? Because our diets need more vegetables. Because vegetables are too often an after-thought. And because it's easy to get stuck in a veggie rut. But after a month, we were just getting started - and summer vegetables will soon arrive!"

Food blog press

I got quoted in a Washington Post article on food blogs trying to estimate the number of food blogs out there. Right now my list is just over 300. I seem to be adding 7-10 every week.

The total number of active english-language food blogs in existence is a pretty tough question - there's no way to know. I guessed, and said there could be as many as double as I have listed (600) and growing by twice as many as I can find a week (maybe 20 a week).

The only way a new food blog gets noticed is if they get listed on another's sidebar, or if they get themselves listed on food porn watch or one of the other lists. Also I find a few from comments they make on my, and other's blogs.

If a food blogger isn't actively involved commenting and contributing to the online food events, they're easily missed. But most bloggers are interested in a little attention or at least like to comment on other's blogs, so that's why my estimate isn't any higher than (around) 600.

Also blogs are a fleeting thing for most people, the enthusiasm doesn't last forever, and neither does the time it takes. Many people give it up and get on with their lives within a few years, so the number of blogs that go dormant or just plain die are a factor. I'd guess 10-15 percent of my present list will stop posting between now and summer.

I just noticed that we're also mentioned in the Tennessean. Most of the reporters links are broken though. Don't these people have editors? The article does give me a new source of food blogs from Globe of Blogs. And no, their count of 689 food blogs does not change my estimate, while there are some good ones listed, most are not active, or are not specifically food blogs.

There's also a food blog article in the San Francisco Chronicle. And again, most of the blogs listed aren't hyperlinked. What's wrong with reporters today? Are they not allowed to hyperlink, or do they not know how? Even the Washington Post's article had incorrect links (it's grocerylists.org, not .com and it's deadmaneating.blogspot.com with no spaces).

Yet another food blog

I still have a big list of food blogs to edit and add to the list, and I'll get it posted before some impending food blog press this week, but I needed to get this one out as soon as possible.

"The Corn Dog Day Blog is for attendees (and aficionados) of National Corndog Day. NCD 2005 is on March 19th this year, so time to get ready." I hope they have a new poster this year, the old one's were great.

That's a picture of me holding a Cozy Dog, at the Illinois State fair a few years back.

Making your own corn dogs requires quite a commitment, but if you got what it takes (basically a deep fryer) you can follow the recipe on the Corn Dog Day Blog. Or if you want a Cozy Dog instead of a Corn Dog (the Cozy people seem to be very explicit about that) you can order 5 lbs. of cozy dog flour, sticks and instructions from them for $20.00.

Another food blog

Another standout food blog that deserves it's own post - Nordljus. The photography blows away just about every other foodporn blog out there. I'll even give a warning to those of you who might be reading this in a cubicle somewhere and have several hours to go before you're allowed to go to lunch - don't look, it'll be pure torture. It's after 11:00 pm, and I'm very tempted to stay up very late making these cinnamons buns.

I should note that I found this and the blog in my last post on Becks & Posh's Homesick! (Brit-based Food Blogs) sidebar list.

A food blog to add

I'm compiling a larger list of food blogs to add to my list, but it might be a few days before I get around to it, so I'll just throw one out here that I found particularly good.

Fire and Knives is a standout among food blogs, it's good looking and the writing is damn close to brilliant. "There's a lot of pretension around food - a lot of nonsense written. Sometimes what we read doesn't seem to have any relevance to our own experience. At the most fundamental level, food should be about the taste but, for those of us who enjoy cooking, there's another level too. The spirit and alchemy of the kitchen - the Fire and Knives."

The "relevance to our own experience" is probably why I like this one. I can say I love my Buffalo china coffee mug, stolen from a Steak 'n Shake (as well as the full set of "Abilene" style dishes stolen by a previous roomate from a Bennigans), and that I hate frozen peas, but I don't think I can talk about either as eloquently.

"Let me be honest here and admit that I abhor the frozen pea. Pitifully jejune in its unformed state, the frozen pea is a membranous sac containing pea-flavoured juice and p
